The new album from Houston MC Rukus Can't Forget is an album
with a purpose. In his own words, the concept at the heart
of Can't Forget is "that you can't forget your purpose,
where you want to go, and most importantly where you came
from." With that being said, it was my humble task to
review the latest long player from Rukus.
Rukus takes no prisoners as soon as you hit 'play.' Ironically,
the triumphant sounds that are emitted from the intro track
"Amnesia" will make you remember that real hip hop
is still alive. He lets listeners know that he's got something
for everybody in his rhymes, even if you're the cat with chrome
on your wheels and packin' that steel. He backs up this claim
by providing songs with varying styles but all packed with
substance. "Did You Ever Think" is a rapid fire
banger that showcases the lyrical versatility that Rukus possesses.
"I Wish" touches on overcoming situations in life,
whether it be escaping the chaos of the streets or just Rukus'
own personal hopes for stardom.
The attainment of stardom is definitely a part of the theme
of this album and is evidenced on songs such as the Soulbrotha
assisted "Shine On" and the braggadocious track
"I'm The Best." "Owned" and "Good
Lovin" are also banging tracks that you'll definitely
want to rewind, the former for the jewels that are dropped
in the song and the latter for its smoothed out vibe that's
perfect for getting your mack on. If you need more education,
tune in to "Rise Up" as Rukus takes us through the
pages of history to show us we can't get any where if we don't
know where we come from.
My favorite song on the album is "Everyday" featuring
Sara S. "Everyday" is an instant classic that describes
the struggle of a pregnant young woman trying to make ends
meat. The cool production by Phreshtrax combine with the vocals
of Rukus and Sara S. to make an incredibly dope track that's
worthy of getting stuck on repeat. 97.9 The Box needs this
in their rotation; not now but right now.
The whole album is very solid from beginning to end. Rukus
has definitely been on his grind and should be proud of this
work of art. Hip Hop lives in the South, y'all. Do not sleep
on MC Rukus - cop Can't Forget when it drops.
